Loy Kratong Festival in UAE

            On 29 Oct 2009, the Thai Ladies Association in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy in Abu Dhabi hosted Loy Kratong Festival at the Club in Abu Dhabi. The main objective of this event was to promote Thai tradition among foreign nationals who have attended the function. On this occasion, the festival witnessed over 200 guests, most of whom had been to Thailand and some had even experienced the true spirit of Loy Kratong there. Beside allowing guests to float the kratongs in the sea, there were Kratong competition, Ms. Noppamas contest, simulation of Thai boxing, traditional Thai dances from various areas of the country etc. happening at the event. All of which were complimented by scrumptious Thai food. Moreover, the Embassy took this opportunity to announce to all Thais to join an activity called “Floating the Kratong and Wishing H.M. the King happiness” through the website which had been launched by the Ministry of Culture for people to make wishes for the King as well as to learn about the history of this festivity.

            On the same night, Dusit Thani Dubai in association with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Thai Airways International in Dubai also hosted Loy Kratong Festival at the hotel for the first time to allow both invitees and hotel guests to experience such romantic culture of Thailand.  Moreover, it was also aimed at promoting Thai identity among the foreigners. On this occasion, the guests had an opportunity to witness the Thai market, float the kratong in the pool, and fulfill themselves with authentic Thai cuisine provided by the hotel. There were also entertained by a number of Thai performances such as the traditional Thai dance. In his presence, Ambassador Karn Chiranond was interviewed by a reporter from Khaleej Times regarding the history of this festival.
