The Royal Thai Embassy in Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with the Embassy’s Labour Office and the Department of Skill Development, Ministry of Labour of Thailand, organized the “Thai Cooking Skill Development Project in Abu Dhabi” from 28 August – 3 September 2014 at the Embassy.
During the first 3 days, the project kicked off with a lecture on the basics of Thai cuisine and cooking demonstration of various popular Thai dishes such as Pad Thai (stir-fried noodle), Yum Woon Sen (spicy vermicelli salad), Tom Yum Goong (spicy prawn soup) and Khao Klook Gapi (fried rice with shrimp paste). Then, the participants took the theoretical and practical exams. 29 participants in total passed both tests and were awarded with the Level-1 National Labour Skill Certificate for cooking profession.
The project turned out to be a huge success. For participants who are professional Thai chefs and assistant chefs, the certificate will open up their career opportunities and improve the credibility and reputation of the restaurants they are working for, hopefully increasing the popularity of Thai restaurants in the UAE. For the other group of attendees who are housewives and non-professionals, the acquired skills will improve the quality of Thai food which is cooked by them and showcased to local people and foreigners through the Embassy’s cultural activities.
